Required Readings:

Abdel-Ghany, M. & Schwenk, F. (1993). “Functional Forms of Household Expenditure Patterns in the U.S.” Journal of Consumer Studies & Home Economics, 17(4):325-342, December. Note: This estimates expenditure functions with a variety of common functional forms.

Lesser, C.F.V. (1963). “Forms of Engel Functions,” Econometrica, 31(4):694-703. Note: This forms the basis for the AIDS functional form for the demand

課程目標
Purpose:

There are three purposes of this course:

1. Introduce students to graduate-level Economics of Consumer Demand

2. Prepare students for further graduate economics courses in the field

3. Provide a working knowledge of the theory of the household to the graduate student. That working knowledge means that by the end of the course the student is able to develop small models of the household suitable for analyzing problems involving consumer demand and consumption. In the analysis, the student should be able to:

a. identify the important economic forces at work;
b. develop hypotheses with respect to their effects on consumption and demand; and
c. Understand the implications of the theoretical analysis for empirical research

課程要求
Techniques: Lectures, readings, problem sets and a term paper will be used to fulfill these purposes. The lectures will provide a systematic treatment of the subject. The readings will either augment or deepen the treatment of the lectures. The problem sets will either have the student demonstrate or work out the consequences of the theory or provide practice problems for the student to analyze.

參考書目
Required Text:

Deaton, A. and J. Muellbauer, (1980). Economics and Consumer Behavior, Cambridge University Press. This is the standard graduate text and reference work in the field. Hereafter referred to as D&M.

Recommended Texts:

Silberberg, E. and W. Suen, (2001). The Structure of Economics: A Mathematical Analysis, 3rd Edition, McGraw-Hill Higher Education. This is a standard economics text with ample review and presentation of the mathematics used in later chapters.

W. Keith Bryant and Cathy Zick (2006). The Economic Organization of the Household, 2nd Ed, Cambridge University Press.

Helpful Texts:

Chaing, A.C., (1974). Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics, McGraw-Hill Book Co. This book also contains all the mathematics and more used in the course and is a useful reference.

Simon, Carl P. and Lawrence Blume, (1994). Mathematics for Economists, W. W. Norton & Company, Inc. This is the Math Economics text used as a reference for Ph.D. theory courses. If you plan to go on, you might want to buy this now.
